Class of 2023 Prize Giving
Thursday, 12 October 2023
Friday 15th September saw our annual Prize Giving, an event exclusively for the boys and parents who have just completed their A levels, many of whom are just about to head off to university and indeed some who will have returned having gone already and then come back for the evening. This is always a lovely event and this year was no exception. It began with drinks and some superb canapés provided by our catering team, Holroyd Howe which provided a wonderful opportunity for the boys and parents to see each other again after the summer exam results and before they go their own ways. We were delighted to have Dr David Fyfe presenting the A Level certificates to the boys and also the Special Prizes, and the event was made all the better by a fantastic turn out, possibly the biggest we have seen for many years. Chair of Governors, Simon Chamberlain, welcomed all of the guests and Dr Brookes gave his highlights from that academic year, which included reflections from all of the Heads of Year who had looked after these boys during their time with us, which for many dates back to Year 3!

In his closing speech, Dr Fyfe reminisced about his time at QEGS and his subsequent career, and in the traditional “advice to the boys’’ section of his address, asked our boys to reflect on just how important their parents and friends are to them, and also on “taking a piece of QEGS with them” - he was quick to explain that this didn’t mean physically! It was clear that the boys and parents knew what he meant, and I do too - after over twenty years here, this school has carved its name on to me and the feeling of pride as I drive through the gates in the morning will never leave me. As I completed the list of prizes, I said to the boys and parents that whilst the evening was in one way a goodbye, I know that we will continue to see and work with them over many years to come and indeed long after I have gone. There is something very special about the collective spirit of the QEGS
