On Friday 4th August, the Old Savs Reading Group met for the first time, in the cafe at the Hepworth Gallery. It was especially nice to see different generations of Old Savillians gathering together in one place - to discuss books they enjoy! I had been thinking about setting up a reading group for some time, following emails from former pupils, who said they missed our book discussions during A-Level Literature classes. I thought it would also be a nice way of staying in touch with Old Savs! In our first meeting, we mainly discussed the best format for the Reading Group, as this is not something I have ever run before. We agreed that meeting in person would be best, perhaps 3 or 4 times a year; and that the Hepworth would be a perfect venue. We also agreed that each person would select a text or topic for the next meeting. So Stevan Balac who has just graduated after studying Politics at King’s College, London has kindly agreed to provide the inspiration for our next meeting, which will be in December. He has suggested exploring different perspectives on patriotism, and will bring along some texts for discussion. We are planning a ‘long read’ over the course of 2024 - possibly War and Peace! We may also explore philosophical topics, art and music, depending on people’s interests. I was conscious that Old Savs were present who didn’t study Literature A-Level, and so I want to make sure that our meetings and discussions are relaxed and informal - not too much like an English lesson! And of course - there is the added bonus of the delicious cakes at the Hepworth! All in all, a great opportunity to catch up with Old Savs in a wonderful setting, and enthuse about books and reading!
